Snow & Winter Book Two

Life has been pretty great for Sebastian Snow. The Emporium is thriving and his relationship with NYPD homicide detective, Calvin Winter, is everything he's ever wanted. With Valentine's Day around the corner, Sebastian's only cause for concern is whether Calvin should be taken on a romantic date. It's only when an unknown assailant smashes the Emporium's window and leaves a peculiar note behind that all plans get pushed aside in favor of another mystery.

Sebastian is quickly swept up in a series of grisly yet seemingly unrelated murders. The only connection tying the deaths together are curiosities from the lost museum of P.T. Barnum. Despite Calvin's attempts to keep Sebastian out of the investigation, someone is forcing his hand, and it becomes apparent that the entire charade exists for Sebastian to solve. With each clue that brings him closer to the killer, he's led deeper into Calvin's official cases.

It's more than just Sebastian's livelihood and relationship on the line--it's his very life.

The Mystery of the Curiosities Snow Winter C S Poe Books

The second Snow and Winter book continues in a vein of crazy murderous New Yorkers obsessed with Sebastian Snow, antique dealer. And Sebastian Snow crazily following the beck and call of a serial killer, intrigued with "solving puzzles." His boyfriend, Calvin Winters, suffering from PTSD, is repeatedly stunned by Sebastian's lunatic mystery addiction (as are we all), and eventually has to shoot people on multiple occasions to keep Sebastian alive. Not so good for Cal's PTSD. It's a little bit of a Scooby Doo pastiche with snips from a number of other mm mystery stories/styles (e.g., Josh Lanyon, Jordan Castillo Price)
If you liked the first book, despite it's loose/easy to solve plot, you will like this one. It is a little romance leavening a little mystery, which is my favorite combo.
Some ratings on things of interest to me in mm romance
Smexy Scale.1-5: 4
Couple of hot explicit scenes; (warning, these two are not the smoothest talkers in bed.)
Humor Scale 1-5:3
Not as funny as the first one, I think. Max, Sebastian's shop assistant, is growing as an interesting funny character...I liked those two teaming up.
Angst Scale 1-5:2
Calvin is really struggling with PTSD and managing symptoms. We have one scene with him feeling overwhelmed and, ongoing, Sebastian's worry about him.
Likable MCs scale 1-5:4
Like these guys, they are caring and kind with each other. Cal really should lock Sebastian up before Cal's career as a cop is blown sky high by his hanging with a nutcase.

The Mystery of the Curiosities Snow Winter C S Poe Books Reviews

Sebastian Snow knows history, books, and antiquities. He suffers from an odd genetic condition that has effected his daylight vision (no color vision, too much light blinds him). In the previous book he met NYPD detective Calvin Winter, red headed freckled hunk, a decorated ex Marine who suffers from PTSD. Calvin was hiding that he was gay from everyone, including the NYPD. Now that he has met Sebastian and developed a relationship with him, Calvin is out of the closet. However, he is still hiding his PTSD from everyone except Sebastisn.

Once again, Sebastian is dragged (not very reluctantly) into a case that should be properly left to the NYPD. This kind of stuff drives Calvin and others who love Sebastian (his father, his assistant Max, his friend Beth, even his ex lover Neil) crazy because they worry about Sebastian stepping into a hornets nest. And he does, once again. Max tries to rein in Sebastian but ends up being dragged into the case too.

Despite their differences, Sebastian and Calvin are wonderful together. They complement each other, in the mathematical sense of complementary angles. Each provides the other with something he needs. I love reading this series. I wish there were more than three novels.

I really like the historical facts strewn in these mysteries. It is fun to learn new stuff while reading a novel. I like to Google the stuff to learn even more.
C.S. Poe is unquestionably a talented writer. Her characters are well-drawn individuals, and she moves the action along at a good pace. I enjoyed the first book - The Mystery of Nevermore - with some misgivings about the Nancy Drew aspects. I need more rationality in my fiction. There have to be darn good reasons for a citizen, even one enthralled by mysteries, to withhold information from the police and do his own sleuthing when his livelihood and even life are at stake. Unfortunately, book #2 had the same problems. The first withholding seemed minor, and might not have even affected the plot. "Okay," I thought, "maybe not a big deal. I will move on." The second suspension-of-disbelief was major but brief, and I could hardly tolerate it except to skim through. The third suspension-of-disbelief was around sleuthing, and it was so absurd, so beyond reality, that I was done. Just done. I hope Ms. Poe continues writing. She clearly has the gift. But I hope she will stop asking her readers to buy into utterly unrealistic action.
I have been waiting for this book since I finish The Mystery of Nevermore (Snow & Winter Book 1), and let me tell you, it was more the worthier the wait. I started reading The Mystery of the Curiosities (Snow & Winter Book 2) the same day I received it. I wanted to take my time get the feel of the Sebastian and Calvin again, but NOPE, I devoured Book 2 in one sitting.

I love mysteries and intriguing clues that lead the characters from one adventure to the next. Let me tell you, C.S. Poe did NOT disappoint.

Book 2 picks-up a few weeks after the end of Book 1. I love the C.S. Poe has used P.T. Barnum and his museum theater for the historical narratives and clues for Book 2. I love that Sebastian has a weakness for mysteries and he can vomit crazy random facts. I love that Calvin wants him to stop “trying to help solve his cases” but (I believe) really understands that Sebastian just can’t help it.

This book starts with a crash and ends a bang. But it’s all the little dialogue and details in between that keeps you turning the page and invested in the Sebastian & Calvin’s adventures. Also, I am in love with C.S. Poe’s writing style and in awe of her ability to string together sentences that make me feel as if I’m watching a movie. So beautiful and descriptive…yeah maybe I’m little jealous (LOL).

But in all seriousness – I highly highly recommend this series and cannot for Snow & Winter Book 3!!!
